Psalm 121:1-2

DaySpring Daily Word of Inspiration:  Psalm 121:1-2 – I lift up my eyes to the mountains-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Today’s passage is extremely profound in how it hit me right in the heart when I got to the root of the scripture. Many, if not all of us will need or have needed some help in this life. As we learn and grow, we come to intersections in life that are outside of our experience and we will (if not already) need help and assistance.

This is where it got deep for me: The scripture poses the question, where does my help come from? Now, call me a softy but it truly made me tear up…. a lil’ bit. When we’re in our times of trouble who is it that we rely on mostly? Do we recognize what the real issue is? I know for myself, I relied on my talents or my friend’s advice. I’m sure most of us can relate to that or to the fact that we have or relied on people we know or trust, books we’ve read, catchy slogans we’ve heard, or even on our own knowledge. However, we didn’t address what the root issue may be!

I’m humbled even in this devotional because at the core, the tendency is to look at those things around us for our help vs. looking to UP; up to the mountains. Non believer or Christian alike, we lose the focus on what the Creator can do and how limited the created actually is. Then there are times when we try to overly spiritualize everything and end up missing out on the true blessing of help that God would have for us – which could be spiritual growth and integrity or stronger faith. Whatever the case, we all from time to time have missed the mark. We have a saying, “Everything happens for a reason”. We love to use it too. If this is the case, then in the good and the bad of life, we should be learning that God is either allowing something to happen or testing us in a particular area … to HELP us! It may be to help us grow in biblical principles, it may be to help us learn patience, it may be to help us learn how to love people genuinely, and it could even be to get us back on track with doing what He wants for our lives. No matter the reason, when we have been broken, there is only one who can help to fix, mend, reconstruct, and be exactly what we need – He is the Maker of everything including the heavens and the earth.

When we hear help, we often assume it has a physical implication (and at times it does). We have to remember that God is good, so everything that he desires for us is of good, for our good, or apart of his good will. His help isn’t just relegated to making sure we have money in our pockets or huge houses to live in or big cars to drive or even great leverage over people. It’s also (and most likely first) for making sure our relationship with Him is right, our attitudes towards his people are right, our desires in this life are of being content, our gratitude, love, and reference for his Son is genuine, and so on and so forth. Who do you look to in making sure that these areas are always on point in your life?

We have to recognize that our help from the Lord is to make us better in service to him, gratitude to his son, and ultimately godly lovers of one another. How many of us need help in these areas today? Have you looked to the one who can truly help you? We pray that today, as you look for help in your life, that your focus shifts from the physical that is evident and gets placed on the spiritual which we can’t readily see. God is our only helper! Maybe he wants to help you get your relationship with him better since the other stuff in your life is the easy stuff; he can & will handle all of that (Matt. 6:33), but are you looking up to him for the help that you truly need? We pray that you begin to today. Without getting help from the Lord in building a relationship with him, where will you get it? There is no one else you can count on. Count on the Lord for your help! It’s going to be more beneficial than any other help you could ever get! In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
