Deuteronomy 7:9

DaySpring Daily Word of Inspiration: Deuteronomy 7:9 – Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments.

What is it that you know about God? We mostly look at him as some sort of genie in a bottle that once we rub it, we can have him come out to grant all of our wishes. Well, that’s not our God at all. I want us to evaluate some of our mindsets this week with simple introductions that will ultimately have us face one of our greatest enemies – ourselves. If we can overcome our miniscule mindsets and what we think to be right and attach ourselves to truth, we may be able to see God differently and experience the life he has for us all.

Back to this genie in a bottle notion, we must understand that God is faithful. God can do and make blessings available for anyone he chooses. The question becomes, what are YOU (& I) doing to be found faithful to him? How do we show God that we believe in him and because of that fact we are faithful too? In the genie in a bottle scenario, we only look at God to see what we can get from him; how he can bless us and make our lives easier. Well, God does have all of the power but he’s not a genie. He is our Father. In any father and son (or daughter) relationship, there is reciprocal and daily action that takes place. It’s not a one sided thing…..ever! Take the example of a parent giving their child everything they wanted all of the time. Now take that same child and let’s suppose they never do what they need to do or are expected to do. They just expect you to keep on giving and not have to do anything in return. How long would you continue to do everything for them before you make them see that they have a duty to do something in the relationship as well? Now this is just a human father! Much to the same fact, God can, will be, and has been faithful to us but where do we stand in being faithful to him in the relationship he wants with you and me?

The scripture points us to the fact that God is faithful and will keep his promises to a thousand generations but it is “to those who love him and keep his commandments.” We have a duty in this life to fulfill if we really want God’s love, promises and blessing in our lives. How do you show God you are going to be faithful in the relationship? You love him and keep his commandments, not only expect him to come to our rescue because he is faithful. That’s not a relationship, that’s a make-believe genie. As much as you can expect from a genie in today’s times, that’s what we should expect from God if we treat him that way.

Today, we want to start the process of retooling our minds to see God for who he really is, how we should treat him for his faithfulness, our duty in our relationship with him through Christ and why it matters so much in the end. Don’t treat God like a genie that you only want to deal with when you want something. Let’s get intimate with God and his nature. Once we know that, it will become easy to treat him like the God he is and for us to do our part in this relationship. In Jesus’ name, AMEN!
